The backbone of the global tide gauge network is the GLOSS Core Network, a global set of 290 tide gauge stations that provide optimal sampling of the global ocean for a range of oceanographic applications. GLOSS Core Network gauges are allocated to each island or group of islands at intervals not closer than 500km, and along continental coasts at intervals generally not less than 1,000km. Preference has been given to islands in order to maximize exposure to the open ocean.
Operation and maintenance of the GLOSS Core Network satisfies nearly the full range of research and operational requirements for the global sea-level network, and commitment to the GLOSS Core Network is a main requirement for Member States participating in the GLOSS programme. The goal for the GCN is to be 100% operational. A list of the GLOSS Core Network stations is shown below together with a map of their locations.
The GLOSS Core Network has been complemented by the definition of regional sets of gauges in several parts of the world, providing an extension and local densification of the Core Network. Although arrangements may differ in each case, one would envisage in future each regional activity having its own methods of coordination, local workshops and products, and international data centre, in addition to representation within the GLOSS Group of Experts. Regional GLOSS networks are encouraged to expand, particularly in partnership with the regional tsunami warning systems or the GOOS Regional Alliances.
